Non-material ways of raising employee morale

It is no secret that the beating heart of any business has to be its staff. Without them it is going to be a whole lot harder to offer your service or sell your product. The only trouble with having staff is that it is down to you as a business owner, along with your HR department and line managers, to ensure that those staff members are as happy as they can be and that they perform to the best of their abilities.

Employee morale can be hard to raise, especially if it is low. However, it is not impossible to do. Many companies seem to think that the only answer is throwing money and material objects at their staff members to keep them happy, but this really isn’t the case. 

In fact, when it comes to raising employee morale, you should never underestimate just how powerful non-material ways to raise employee morale can be. 

Work on communication

It is all too easy to dismiss communication as not being too important within a workplace, but the truth is, communication definitely holds the key to making sure that your employees are as happy as possible. 

When you communicate properly, they feel valued, they feel trusted with the information that you are sharing. They also feel that they are in the loop; that they are part of the family, that you want to make sure that they are informed with what is happening. All of these things are going to make them feel pretty great and in turn boost their morale more than you could possibly think. Reward great performance

We all like to know that we have done a job well, so, it makes sense that a great way to boost employee morale is to make sure that you always reward great performances when they occur. A common misconception is that the only reward is something that is monetary in nature, but that really isn’t the case. 

Sometimes all you need to do is highlight the hard work that the particular person or team has put in and thank them for it. You could consider another reward, such as giving them a Friday afternoon off or a longer lunch, but it doesn’t always have to be some grand gesture. 

Arrange volunteering 

Volunteering and businesses go hand in hand. Running a business means that you have plenty of resource to hand, which you can then offer out to the charity or organisation which needs it. Not only can volunteering help the charity or organisation, but it also has a knock-on positive impact on your employees too.

They will feel great about being able to help and they will also enjoy taking the time out of work to spend time with their team and do something good. This, in turn, will boost their morale and how they feel about working within your company; both of which can lead to much happier employees. 

Consider working from home options

More and more people are becoming aware of how important a work/life balance is and also make an effort to achieve it. This means that business owners need to ascertain what they can do to support their employees. 

One common approach that definitely seems to be on the rise of late is that of working from home. There are a variety of perks to the employee to working from home, all of which add up to make a difference to employees with families.

You might be worried about how to communicate with your staff members who are working from home, as well as ascertain how much work has been done. But, thanks to modern technology, there are plenty of ways that working from home can now be a viable option for many businesses. 

Offer the right training

You might hear a few moans and growns when the word “training” comes up, but training is a huge part of developing your employees. Even if they don’t think so. The power that plenty of good quality training can have on your employee morale can actually be impressive, which means that it is 100% something that you need to focus on. 

Training comes in all shapes and sizes and if you want to make sure that your staff are truly happy then you need to consider all avenues. Think about the work that they are doing right now and what training is going to help them in their role. Then, think about what possible paths their career can take next and train them for that.

You should also ask them what they see their future holding, and, if you can offer the training and it fits in with your business need, then offer them this too. 

 

Employee morale need not be difficult to boost; all it takes is a little time and effort.
