Make Your House Feel Like a Home

Home is not just a place you live in, it is the place where you feel comfortable, happy and like yourself. It is the place you design with a lot of love, where all the little details speak about your style and personality. Making your house feel like a home doesn’t include simply furnishing the rooms. It is about those little things you scatter around it that make it cozier and more inviting. If you have just moved in, or you simply feel like there is something missing in your house, here are some tips for transforming it into a real home.

Create an accent wall

The living room is usually the space where you spend the most of your time in and entertain your guests. That is why you need to devote a lot of attention to it. One of the best ways to upgrade your living room is to set up an accent wall, which is usually located behind the sofa. An accent wall can feature art, family photos or an interesting wallpaper. While the accent wall is usually created in the living room, you can introduce it to other rooms as well. When displaying art or photos, try to incorporate a unifying element. That can be the color, size or design of the frames, or the very style of art and photography (e.g. black & white).

Throw in some throws

Throw pillows are another interesting detail that can be applied to both the lounge and the bedroom, and they make the entire space feel warmer, cozier and more inviting. Mix different textures, such as knit, faux fur and velvet. Throws are also a fantastic way to inject some color and texture into any space.

Speaking of texture…

There is nothing that can make a room feel cozier than a rug. Rugs do not only anchor the room, if selected carefully, but they can make the space seem livelier. They can also serve as a unique design statement. This is especially true if you layer them. According to this trend, you should layer rugs of different textures. For example, a beautiful organic jute rug can be complemented with a soft cowhide or sheepskin rug.

Make it come to life…

A lot of studies pointed out the impact houseplants can have on one’s mood, health and the overall well-being. If that is not convincing enough, you should also know that plants are very good at purifying the indoor air which can often be very polluted. Therefore, you should introduce plants into every room of your house, bathroom included. Apart from potted plants, you can also make the space more vibrant by placing a vase with fresh flowers wherever you can.

Think about the details…

As we have already mentioned, the details are often decisive in transforming an ordinary property into a home. This is a very wide notion, and it requires a meticulous approach. For example, bookshelves with your favorite books should find their place in your living room. Shelves can also be filled with travel souvenirs, family photos and various other memorabilia. You can class up your closet by using wooden hangers instead of regular plastic ones. Changing hardware, such as doorknobs and cabinet handles, can also contribute to a homier appearance. In the bathroom, you can customize shampoo bottles, hang a statement chandelier… The possibilities are unlimited, as long as your home speaks about your style and personality.

There surely is no place like home, but home is not created with magic. What makes a home are the people who live in it. Of course, you don’t have to do all of these things in a day. You can enjoy the joys of creating your special space one day at a time.
